How many people have their Bluetooth switched on?

Figures range from 40% to 60% of users having their Bluetooth enabled; this figure continues to grow as the use of Bluetooth accessories especially in cars continues to increase. The main issue with Bluetooth Marketing is NOT how many people have Bluetooth enabled, but how many phones a Zone can simultaneously service. In practice Bluetooth Zones show that if footfall is high, then the limiting factor is the Bluetooth bandwidth available for downloads rather than enabling more phones.

  1. Hi there,

I think the figures you mention are highly dependent on the average age (amongst other parameters) of the target audience. For example, I have seen very different numbers in events in shopping malls (with a lot of teenage users around all the time, and a mix of younger to mid-age adults ), compared to stadiums (with few teenagers, but mainly younger to mid-age adults), compared to campaigns running in the city centre on weekdays, with mostly mid-age professionals.

However, I definitely agree with you that this is not the main issue. It can easily be overcome by providing valuable content and using appropriate signs to notify users of the presence of the services.

I can also confirm, from my own experience, that download bandwidth is limited when large numbers of users start appearing. And this is even more important for bluetooth-based mobile applications, which however offer the best kind of experience for the end user.

  2. This is one of those questions that are frequently asked by businesses which are yet to get started with beacons. However,in contrast to common belief, turning on Bluetooth won't drain your device's battery life. The new Bluetooth specification called Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE or Bluetooth 4.0) has made some massive improvements with respect to the impact of Bluetooth on battery life. And it is projected that by 2018 over 90% of devices will support Bluetooth Smart globally. Therefore, a vast majority of mobile devices that are currently available in the market are equipped to have Bluetooth ‘on’ without any noticeable impact on battery life. Adding on to that, North America has some of the highest rates of Bluetooth usage at approx 45% across devices. We have discussed in detail about ways in which businesses can encourage their audience to turn Bluetooth ON here: http://blog.beaconstac.com/2016/05/7-ways-businesses-can-encourage-users-to-turn-their-bluetooth-on/
